A couple of months ago a fellow called Egoitz Campo reached out to tell me he was trying to organise a Sega Master system tournament in the Basque Country, and ask whether I would be interested in recieving a report of the event. Naturally I replied “yes of course!” so here we are – This is Egoitz’ report from the tournament which was held on the 6th of April. They intend to have a follow up in October so if you’re reading this from the Basque country and are interested, email him at campo_16(at)msn.com
II.Basque Country Sega Master System Championship 2024
Last Tuesday, April 6, Euskal-Retro organized the I. Basque Country championship for the Sega Master System, a great console from the 80s. Seven players met at the “Cafe Berria” in Santuxu (Bilbao-Basque Country). We went up to the second floor and, after turning on the television, we first played the American retro computer TRS-80 before moving on to the Master System.
We played a total of three games: Enduro Racer, Space Harrier and Transbot. Our original idea was to play Fantasy Zone but since it was difficult to get it to work we decided to play Transbot, which has a similar theme.
Enduro Racer is a motocross game, very colorful and interesting. The objective is to take the
motocross bike as fast as possible, jumping off ramps and avoiding crashing into cars and other obstacles. We played the first scene and the player who completed it in thee shortest time won.
Then we played the mythical game, Space Harrier. Known to everyone from the Amiga 500 or the arcades. The one who advanced the furthest won. We all had pretty bad scores, so we should probably practice more. Finally, as I said before, we wanted to
play Fantasy Zone but since it was difficult to get it to work (I had to clean it with alcohol) we decided
to play Transbot instead – a similar shooting game in a futuristic environment. We played until
two lives were lost, with the one who had the most points at the end being the winner. The tournament was very competitive and interesting. In the end, the best player was Gorka Perez, a very enthusiastic player of retro systems. Egoitz and Andoni also played very well. We intend to organize the II. Basque Counry Master System Championship in October this year.
