I’ve been thinking of writing something on the whole music streaming world for a while now. Thankfully, Jasper Hamill over at The Mirror has given me an excuse with his vaguely partisan article on Apple Music.<\/a><\/p>\n

As both an artist and a keen listener, I’ll admit my relationship with both Apple Music and Spotify is perhaps something other than ordinary – so my experiences may not ring true for everyone. With that said, here we go:<\/p>\n

As an Artist<\/h2>\n

First things first: i would just like to point out that I was originally genuinely excited about Apple music. Though (as you may have noticed) I’m not exactly in this whole music malarkey to gain fame and boundless riches, I was still pretty chuffed to be granted an opportunity to seize a bigger clump of the financial pie than was currently being offered by Spotify. Woo.<\/p>\n

On top of that, I thought the whole Connect idea was a genuinely ingenious one too: No one likes to see an endless barrage of irritating (but necessary) “listen to my rubbish music” tweets, so having a dedicated music service where that sort of thing was both welcome AND encouraged seemed like a obvious win for everyone involved.<\/p>\n

When I logged in for the first time, however, my hopes were completely crushed. The primary problem for me was (and is) quite a simple one: a direct search for Fatnick in Apple Music revealed no hits for my music whatsoever.<\/p>\n

As an artist, this basically makes the whole service completely useless. If people who are directly looking for my music are unable to find it, what chance do those who aren’t directly looking for it have? When I’m getting a reasonable number of plays over at Spotify, why should I divert my efforts into helping Apple when there’s no guarantee I’ll have anything to show for it in the future?<\/p>\n

I don’t want this to come across as sour grapes – I don’t have delusions of grandeur and I don’t expect to be included in Apple’s fancy curated playlists or anything like that. I’m perfectly happy just being another value in the database… All I’m saying is that when someone goes looking for that value, it would be quite nice if Apple returned it to them. That doesn’t seem like too much too ask.<\/p>\n

I’d also like to point out at that I’m not paranoid. I don’t believe that Apple are out to get me. I do believe, however, that there is a massive tension at the heart of Apple Music. Is it a bespoke recommendation for those with exquisite taste or a vast repository for every music recording every released by anyone? It feels a bit like Apple Music is trying to be both, but successfully managing to achieve neither.<\/p>\n

Indeed, a similar confusion seems to hover over the connect social media service. Technical issues aside (and it’s REALLY annoying only being able to post from your phone when all of your works in progress are on your desktop,) its scope is frustratingly limited. Not only is it hidden away in a tab (if Apple Music is a walled garden, connect is a small pond fenced off in the corner,) but the only entries you see are from artists you’re already following. From an artist’s perspective this is incredibly frustrating: It’s one thing to be relatively invisible in the main library, but being equally invisible on the social side is quite another. An integrated, well supported and searchable social network side was one area which could have made a massive, massive difference. As it stands, its a bit of a confused mess.<\/p>\n

On a purely technical level there are further drawbacks too. You see all of the lovely Spotify links over there in the sidebar (including the crucial follow button?) None of that is available on Apple Music at all, making it incredibly difficult to work into a general web presence. Now I’m not saying that Spotify isn’t without its fair share of little annoyances, but at the end of the day they’re currently serving a small army of Fatnick fans with dozens of track plays a day – which is all I could ask for, really. Apple Music might well be equal to Spotify in terms of being a physical repository to store music, but in publicity terms it’s way, way behind.<\/p>\n

As A Customer<\/h2>\n

I’m pleased that Jasper over at the Mirror seems to be having fun with Apple music, as for everyone else it seems to be a colossal shitstorm<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, I haven’t had to put up with it trashing my entire music library myself, but I am left slightly perplexed at the conclusion that Apple Music has a better recommendation engine than Spotify. Though I accept the point about the superiority of Apple Music’s writing, I think that Apple’s ‘victory’ in that department hints at a much larger flaw in their entire recommendation system.<\/p>\n

After all, there is no reason why Apple Music should not be able to entirely stomp Spotify in this department: Not only do they have a vaster reservoir of music, but they already have access to both my entire digital library and my listening habits. This should be a slaughter…Except its not. Yes, Spotify’s writing may not be penned by professionals, and they may only have access to a relatively small snapshot of my recent musical history, but they’ve still managed to throw up a ton of useful obscure stuff I may not have encountered otherwise (from the chippy brilliance of Chipzel’s Never Tell Me The Odds <\/a>to the sublime keyboard work on Larry Carlton’s Blues Bird<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Magazine! A band so good I ‘ve listened to them thousands of times before downloading Apple Music…<\/p><\/div>\n

Apple Music’s recommendations, on the other hand, seem to be spectacularly useless. When Mecha-Zane Lowe isn’t presenting me with music I already own (I’m not sure I need an Intro to Magazine when I already have a copy of everything they’ve ever released sitting in my iTunes library,) it’s just being plain useless. INXS. Really?<\/p>\n

To me, it feels that the difference between the two services is that Spotify’s recommendation engine is using their entire library to find me me stuff, where Apple seems to be filtering my taste through the music they’ve produced copy for. That, for me, could well be the reason why Spotify me suggests I try Fatburger (who I’d never heard) and Apple suggests John Coltrane (who, inevitably, I and everyone else in the universe, has.)<\/p>\n

Just as big a problem for Apple Music, mind you, is the interface. I’m not really sure how anyone could prefer Apple Music to Spotify. Yes, on an aesthetic level the artwork is probably rendered in a slightly prettier fashion on the Apple service, but a user interface has to do more than look pretty – and while Spotify feels like a helpful chaperone who leads me gracefully towards what I want (and didn’t know I wanted) to hear, the Apple Music interface feels more like a barrier between me and the music.<\/p>\n

Indeed, from the unhelpful sand-boxing of elements like connect to the infuriating rendering of the magnifying glass in areas not covered by the search, I’m beginning to wonder whether Apple have managed to lose all of the staff who had any concept of user experience. Although Spotify and Apple Music are largely made up the same ingredients, the whole Apple Music package just feels slightly less than intuitive.<\/p>\n

Well, I say the same ingredients, but Apple Music has one slightly oddball extra: Beats One Radio. Though it represents a big coup in terms of celebrity endorsement, I’m slightly confused as to why it’s been rolled into Apple Music. After all, if you have a massive library that goes into the millions and are able to offer me hundreds of tracks tailored to my own specific tastes, why on earth would I want to listen to Zane Lowe name-drop for ten minutes before playing a track which isn’t tailored to me? It’s inclusion feels about as current as Apple bundling an 8-track cassette player for your car.<\/p>\n

Overall, I find that Apple Music seems to be confused on almost every single level, from concept through to interface. I don’t trust its recommendations as a listener, and I don’t really feel supported as an artist. Though a good analogue of Spotify on a purely mechanical level, it feels like Apple’s engineers don’t really understand what people want from a streaming service…which might be why so many people intend  to turn away once the free trial is up<\/a>.
\n<\/p>\n

Streaming In General<\/h2>\n

So between the two, Spotify is probably the better service for everyone involved (bar, perhaps, multi-platinum artists who have no real need for further publicity.) Lets ask a slightly broader question:Is streaming itself a good thing?<\/p>\n

Overall, I’d say yes. Though Taylor Swift makes a good point about devaluing music, music was devalued long before Spotify or Apple Music came on the scene. In a post-Napster world, it was always going to be impossible for the big names to keep up the pretense of the \u00a320 album. That’s without even considering the democratisation of music that’s taken place through the spread of incredibly cheap music creation software and the rise of sites like Bandcamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Conceptually then, I have no real problem with streaming whatsoever. As far as I’m concerned, all the streaming services (lets not forget the likes of Xbox music and Deezer as well!) provide a risk free way for people from all over the world to try my music, and I’m pretty much ok with that.<\/p>\n

If you are interested in supporting your friendly neighborhood independent artist however, you should be under no illusion that streaming is anywhere near as useful as buying their music (even with Apple’s larger payout.) If there’s an album you find yourself listening to over and over again, please consider buying just one track from it. The Artist will almost certainly be very grateful that you did.<\/p>\n

Overall though, thing’s are pretty rosy. Thank you all for supporting me and giving my music the time of day. Whether you’re listening through Spotify or Apple or Google or Deezer or Amazon or emusic, You’re all incredibly lovely people. Cheers.<\/p>\n
