Battle might score poorly in the originality stakes, but all of its inspirations were great games in their own right, so there’s nothing to stop Battle joining their ranks. In theory, anyway.

Sadly though, the designers opted to carry this laziness over from the design to the execution, leaving us a game which falls short in every single area. Though the map screen gives you a choice of 8 very different American locales, they all share the same bland shade of yellow for the foreground (even city-based stages like Chicago and New York,) Every stage features the same hazards (jumps, road blocks and oil slicks) and the only trackside scenery found in any of the stages is an occasional chevron. There’s only type of civilian vehicle in the game, and it only has two different movement patterns (one type is slow and stationary, the other veers drunkenly from side to side.)

Why yes, those are exactly the same cars. On every level.

Even these failings may be forgivable if the game played ok, but the handling model never feels quite right and the whole thing gets very repetitive very quickly. It also feels a bit weird that the best way of overtaking traffic is generally to veer into the empty space off the sides of the road. It should be noted that the challenge ramps up massively in the later stages of the game, but this isn’t a positive thing: The challenge stems largely from the target car’s ability to glide, ghost-like, through impenetrable walls of traffic.

If there was one saving grace, It’s noteworthy that you have the option to change the back ground music before you drive, but none of the tracks are particularly memorable and, unlike in Outrun, they didn’t even bother to name them. Blimey.

With a game like Battle Outrun, it’s tempting to conclude that it’s for fans of the series’ That really doesn’t apply here though. There ‘s simply nothing here for anyone who enjoyed either Outrun or Chase H.Q. The entire experience feels rushed, underdeveloped and, to be frank, just isn’t much fun. In summary, Outrun Europa was a fitting swan song for the 8-bit Outruns. Not only is it incredibly impressive visually, but any shortcomings in the gameplay stem from trying to do too much rather than too little. The music isn’t up to much i suppose, but well you can’t have everything can you? Yes, definitely. Though it may contain the sort of neon-dripped futuristic cityscapes the name would have you expect, the game also contains the kind of ruins, forests and natural European-style landscapes you’d expect from an Outrun game. Ok, so the layouts themselves may have actually owed more to Taito’s Outrun rip-off Full Throttle then to Sega’s original, but they’re definitely a welcome return. As the game included 5 tracks with multiple forking paths, this added bags of replayability to a game which was already as addictive as any coin-op.

Speaking of things synonymous with Outrun, though there might be a clearer EDM influence here, the music in 2019 definitely feels sufficiently Outrunesque too, and completes an outstanding package. It may not have began life as a true Outrun title, but the end result is something which can be considered among the best of the 16-bit racing games. Crumbs.

Outrunners

As Other Outruns go Outrunners is a bit of an oddball, as it was based on an official Sega arcade game. Outrunners deserves to be considered a mainstream Outrun title then, surely?

Sadly both the original arcade game – and the Megadrive port – seem to be the runts of the Outrun litter. Appearing in 1993, the Outrunners arcade game was perhaps doomed before it even began. Though it marked the apogee of 2D sprite scalers thanks to its use of Sega’s fancy System 32 hardware, it’s impact was inevitably lessened by having to share arcade space with Sega’s fancy 3D model 1 (and later model 2) games.

The Split screen is very difficult to get past

This was a shame, as Outrunners was a pretty forward-looking game. It also included an impressive 8-player link mode. Thankfully, though Outrunners may have Been doomed to powerslide into the cracks of public memory in the long term, it did manage to build up a reasonable following at the time. This ensured that it would receive a home port.

Which is a shame – if you can the game actually plays ok

Sadly though, Sega didn’t handle the Megadrive port themselves. Instead they farmed it out to Data East. Not a good start. However, to give Data East credit, they managed to cram all of the major elements in here. Not a mean feat considering that Outrunners had the most complicated map of any Outrun title, changeable in-game music and a large selection of cars. They even managed to cram in a console-exclusive ‘original’ mode, which sees you face off against the other Outrunners in 1-on-1 single-stage battles, and included a whole load of little graphical details like an Orca that ambiently swims in the tunnel stage. Hurrah!

Even the handling, which is another potential pitfall, feels in tune with the arcade. In fact I may actually prefer it: the slideyness actually feels even closer to Outrun 2, which of course means it comes pretty close to arcade perfection. On paper, then, Outrunners is actually a pretty good game.

Look! it has an underwater tunnel and everything

‘So then, what’s the snag?’ You may be asking. Well, err, it’s split screen. All the time. Even in One Player mode. I’m not sure if this was done for a technical reason (perhaps they thought that smaller sprites was the only way to recreate something that approached the visual standards of the System 32 hardware?) or if Data East were so enamoured with the arcade’s multiplayer they thought that it could ONLY be played in multiplayer. Either way, this was a colossal mistake. From FM recreations of a surprisingly sample-based soundtrack, to the impressive attempts to recreate every detail of the Outrunner’s cars, Data East’s Outrunners is a brilliant port but it fails by default. If you get past the split screen i can guarantee that you will have some fun, but the split screen is a very difficult thing to get past. Oh dear.

So that about sums up the other console Outruns. Did Sega mismanage the series? Maybe. As we’ve seen before, Outrun was definitely the hottest port of 1987 – so it is a bit embarrassing that Outrunners never even officially made it to the UK. With the notable exception of Battle Outrun, it can’t be said that the Other Outruns were bad games though.

Perhaps the real problem were the ports of the arcade games themselves. As impressive as it was to have arcade-style games at home, you could complete both Outrun and Turbo Outrun in under half an hour. Had Sega added career modes as they did with Super Hang On, the series may have remained fresher in the eyes of gamers, and provided a platform for the likes of 2019.

On the other hand, this is good news for Retro Gamers. Outrun 3d is the only one of these that could be considered rare or expensive and the rest can be picked up for a song – so go forth retrogamers and enjoy!

As we’ve already established, I like Outrun.
