If they of crop up, as they do from time to time, the consensus seems to be that they were disappointing failures that aren’t really worth your time. This, however, is wrong. I was there at the time damn it, and I remember being able to extract at at least a tiny amount of fun from each of these little gaming molluscs. Well, On the Spectrum, at least. lets have a look at each of the Speccy ports in turn then, beginning with the original Outrun.

Next Page: Outrun

Now that arcades are little more than a historical footnote, it seems a bit strange that the home ports of Outrun were as a MASSIVE, MASSIVE deal. They were though. If you looking at the reviews from the time, there can be no doubt that the 8-bit outruns were among the most eagerly awaited games of the year.

Which was a shame: If there was a game that was that was designed to be unportable to tape-based machines, it was probably be Outrun. By the late 80s, Speccy developers had become quite adept at squishing flashy 16-bit visuals into tiny monochrome sprites, but Outrun’s reliance on choice seems, at a hardware level, beyond anything the Speccy’s sequential tape drive could deliver. Developers Probe had a choice: either ditch both the open-ended structure and the spirit of the original, or turn the tape into a nightmarish labyrinth of multi-loading hell. Eek.

Guys, why was the beach stage green? 🙁

Ingeniously, Probe found a third option: while each level had to be loaded into memory as the player chose it, somehow they were able to keep it there on subsequent play throughs. Not quite as fluid as the original then, but not a bad compromise either.

In fact ‘Not a bad compromise’ pretty much sums up the spectrum port of Outrun. Though the third of the games iconic music tracks, passing breeze, was dropped; the port features impressively accurate renditions of magical sound shower and splash wave. These alternate from one level to the next, which is a surprisingly elegant solution when you factor in the multi-loading (the game also came with a second cassette which featured a recording of the arcade soundtrack.)

See! This stage is yellow. Why couldn’t the first stage be yellow?

On the graphics front, Probe were (obviously) working with a much reduced colour palette. Aside for a dodgy monochromatic green used for the games opening beach-side track, they use the palette to full effect, switching around the colours to give an impression of travel that the reduced track-side complexity would fail to convey on its own. Ingeniously, this reduction in complexity didn’t apply to the cars as well. Yes, the iconic red Testarossa might be reduced to a sinister shadow, but at least the detail’s are clearly distinguishable – copyright-bating prancing horse included.

In fact, pretty much the only thing that lets Speccy Outrun down is the frame rate. At the best of times it’s hardly silky, which unfortunately means it grinds almost to an almost complete halt on the more complex stages (which Probe, to their credit, tried to recreate in full.) This is compounded by the stupidly long skiddy-crash animations you’re forced to watch every time you come into contact with anything (including the suicidal npc cars,) which conspires to make the whole experience much more frustrating than it really needed to be.

Speccy outrun was a pretty good port, then. The more advanced features may have been lost in translation, but the core experience made it through pretty much intact. It wasn’t arcade Outrun, but it was never going to be. Could they have done any better? This question was answered by the next game in the series, Turbo Outrun.

Next Page: a Ferrari F40

Turbo Outrun arrived a couple of years after the original. On the surface it had a lot going for it. Not only was it made by some of the same team as the original, but they’d actually worked on a second game in between, Outrun Europa, which was axed at the last minute for a port of Sega’s arcade sequel.

On top of that, Sega’s sequel was more Spectrum-friendly than the original Outrun: While the original was all about care-free cruising and player choice, the American-themed sequel was an intense linear duel between the player’s Ferrari F40 and some goon in a Porsche. This duel was helpfully divided between four groups of four stages, making it perfectly suited to multi-loading on the Spectrum.

People of Oklahoma: This is what your countryside looks like

Thankfully, the developers had learned a bit from the mistakes made with the original Outrun. Feeling generally optimised, and with a reduced draw distance, the game is capable of providing a much smoother experience than the first port.

Unfortunately, there’s a big ‘but,’ and it’s linked to the word ‘capable.’ you see, as with the original, the team were guilty of the (admirable) charge of trying to get too close to the original arcade game. Alongside the beautifully detailed player sprite, the tracks are littered with jeeps, lorrys, tumbleweeds, bollards and impressively huge and detailed scenery objects. While it’s heart-warming to see the Spectrum processing such detailed environments, they do have a habit of slowing the game down to a complete crawl. In fact, in some places its worse than the original Outrun port: not only does the game slow down, but the controls can become unresponsive, easily trapping you in an incredibly stupid-looking suicidal death-swerve. This is irritating, but not game-breaking.

A little known fact about the Grand Canyon is that it’s completely pink.

Sadly, Spectrum Turbo Outrun was a commercial flop, which was a shame. The arcade sequel may not have been as fondly received as the original Outrun, but it’s still a fantastic racing game (vaguely misoginistic message aside.) Even with slowdown, the Speccy version is still supremely playable to and even boasts a catchy original soundtrack to boot.

The final Sega arcade sequel, Outrunners, wasn’t too arrive until a year or so past the Speccy’s sell-by date. However, US Gold still had their cancelled ‘Outrun Europa’ project up their sleeve. Whatever became of that I wonder?

Next Page: A man on a bike

You’d think, with Turbo Outrun having under-performed commercially, Us Gold may have been tempted to bundle up their completed Outrun Europa prototype and have it sitting on the shop shelves faster than you can say ‘Magical Sound Shower.’ Instead, the game was rebuilt from scratch and a title that started as a cynical cash-in ended up as an ambitious Spy Thriller that pushed the 8-bit machines to their limits.

The competitive nature of Turbo Outrun seems like a big departure from the care-free nature of the original, but Outrun Europa pushed things much further. Cast as a vaguely incompetent spy who has to recover both his red Ferrari AND some important spy-related documents, Outrun Europa doesn’t just feature the strict time limits found in Outrun and Turbo, but the player also has to fend off both local police and dastardly enemies who both wish to ram them off the road.

Look! a Tree! I think that’s a tree.

On top of this, the player also has to get used to driving multiple vehicles: Beginning on a high-powered motorbike in London, you’ll switch to a jet ski and a number of different cars as you progress through the chase. If that wasn’t complicated enough, some vehicles also feature weapons, while others are equipped with collectable turbo boosts.

Sounds a bit complicated for a Speccy game, doesn’t it? Well, the designs for the visuals were every bit as impressive as the lofty concept. The Master System version, for example, features scenery which is almost Megadrive-esque in quality.

Out of my way greyscale Speed boat!

Obviously then, something had to give. In this case, it was the graphical quality. Made by some of the same fellows as Turbo, the compromises made in Europa consequently went in quite a different direction to the previous arcade ports. Where Outrun and Turbo had focussed on chunky sprites and scenery, Europa focussed on performance: The controls were much more responsive than in the previous titles, and the scenery flows by at a reasonably fluid rate too. Hurrah.

This focus on performance, however, means that the game looks atrocious: Rendered in depressing shades of grey, the visuals look like they’ve been created by a dodgy dot-matrix printer, with individual pixels clearly visible on screen. This may have not been a bad thing in itself, but unfortunately a preview in Your Sinclair (and subsequent review) featured chunky, full-colour graphics. This of course meant that anyone who had seen these early builds would have been understandably miffed with the final product.

Which is a shame, as despite the slightly crappy graphics Europa is still a technical marvel. While Outrun and Turbo features decidedly choppy transitions between stages, it’s incredibly impressive how the programmers managed to effortlessly swap ‘London’ for ‘Kent’ and allow you to slowly transition from open water to the French coast. The amount of hills and tight corners is also remarkably impressive. On the technical front, Europa was close to being a masterpiece.

The same cannot be said about the gameplay though. Not only was the difficulty level probably on just the wrong side of taxing, but the shared handling models meant the game couldn’t fully deliver on its multiple vehicle promise. Still, i think its hard to argue that, based on ambition alone, Europa isn’t a fitting swan song to the Speccy Outruns.

Next Page: Wrap up

So then, there they are – all three Outrun games that were available for the ZX Spectrum. On the one hand, I suppose It’s easy to see how those who had played on the original arcades would have been disappointed with the slow pace, compromised visuals and multi-loading. However i think the sheer amount of ambition on display in these games means they deserve not to simply vanish into the more obscure annals of gaming history. The final products may have been scorched, but it was only because they had manage to soar so close to the sun. When you consider how many modern sequels are little more than expansion packs, I think we can learn a lot from the sheer effort that was put into the likes of Outrun and Europa.

Thank you, once again. to World of Spectrum, for providing the sheer amount of Speccy resources that they do.

Its cold, its wet, its nasty and half the country is underwater.
